Jacob famously tricked his brother Esau out of his birthright and later his father's blessing.

Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:29-34), and Jacob later deceived his aging, nearly blind father Isaac to receive the blessing intended for the firstborn (Genesis 27:1-29). This rivalry created lasting tension between the two brothers.

This encounter is described in Genesis 32:24-30, with the name Israel interpreted as meaning 'he struggles with God.' This new name eventually became the name for the entire nation descended from Jacob's twelve sons.
